Supporting our Student Athletes

An SF State basketball player makes a shot while fans cheer from the bleachers in the background

San Francisco State alumni George and Judy Marcus are two of SF State’s leading supporters. The Marcuses have made an extraordinary impact on our campus as donors, leaders on the SF State Foundation Board, and community advocates for SF State. Now, they have lent their support to Athletics at SF State with a gift of $150,000.

"George and Judy’s generous commitment is a wonderful example of leading donors to San Francisco State helping our student athletes," said Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie.

A Legacy Of Giving Back

SF State Alumnus Paul WhangPaul Whang was one of the first Korean-Americans to graduate from San Francisco State University. After completing his degree, he received his teaching credential and aspired to become a teacher in San Francisco. At that time, a counselor told him that the chances of finding work as an Asian American would be impossible.

But through Mr. Whang's resiliency and determination, he pursued an extraordinary career with the San Francisco Park and Recreation Department. As Director of the Chinese Playground and Chinese Recreation Center for 30 years, he impacted the lives of countless Chinese youth who came to the playground every day after school. Mr. Whang passed away in 2005, and his family has now generously endowed a fellowship in his honor at SF State.

Thank you!

The San Francisco State community could not be more grateful for your ongoing support, especially on behalf of our students! Whether you contribute to the annual fund, scholarships, fundraising events for various programs, or to help maintain facilities, know that you and a growing family of thousands of other donors help steer SF State. Through increased private support and astute management, the university is now stronger than ever. SF State is increasingly recognized nationally as a leading model for public higher education and well-positioned for a bright future
Nonetheless, with the state covering approximately just half of the university’s budget today, and tuition over 100% higher than just a few years ago, we will continue to rely on the generosity of our alumni, parents and friends.
