Since 1934, the East Bay Regional Parks District has worked to preserve and steward parks and trails in the East Bay. By providing maintenance and access for millions of visitors annually, the district has ensured that these parks. Longtime SF State Professor Carol Severin, who taught in the Recreation, Parks, and Tourism (RPT) Department, served on the district’s board of directors for more than twenty years. Now with thanks to the Regional Parks Foundation, RPT students at SF State will benefit from Carol Severin’s legacy through a $25,000 endowed scholarship in her honor!
Professor Severin has enjoyed an extraordinary 50+ year career and is a renowned expert in the field. This past year she was recognized at the profession’s annual national conference with a distinguished service award. SF State Professor and former RPT chair Patrick Tierney says, “Carol has been a big supporter of our students, department, and SFSU. The scholarship in her honor will be a big financial help to an outstanding RPT major when they need it the most.”
Carol Johnson, assistant general manager of the Park District adds, “Carol Severin has mentored and inspired many throughout her career, and we hope that this scholarship will help continue her commitment to educating bright new parks and recreation industry leaders of tomorrow.”
Thanks to this very generous contribution , many of our talented students in the RPT department will have a reduced burden of tuition and fees. We are very grateful for the East Bay Regional Park District and Regional Parks Foundation’s commitment to SF State.
